Ever since the Long Beach Marathon back in October, I can describe my training in one gunt - Meh. I've had trouble with consistency. Miss a day here. Pass on a day there. Don't finish the intervals. Unfinished runs. I know. I was in a recovery phase and shouldn't be too concerned about things. And to be honest, I wasn't too concerned about distance, but I *was* concerned about sometimes just not being motivated enough to finish a workout. I had been feeling like there was this little hill right in front of me, and I just didn't have what it took to make it over.
I'm breathing a little easier now though because this week has been a bit of a turnaround. So far I've made and finished every workout. Everything culminated yesterday in my first double digit run since marathon weekend a month ago. It was about as effortless a run as I've had in quite a while. 10 miles at an average pace of 9:43. I kept it aerobic with an average heart rate of 80% of max. Think I just made it over the hump....
What helps me get out of my funk is read the running blogs to get me going. It helps majority of the time. Glad that you had a better workout this week.
ReplyDeleteGreat Glenn. It happens to all runners at some point. However, I think you are being hard on yourself. Finishing your second marathon - you DESERVE a break. Okay to take time now and then.
ReplyDeleteI've been feeling unmotivated too! Do you think it's the holidays and post-marathon energy dip? I think I've tried to keep myself motivated with my Jan. marathon looming over my head. I feel like I can't really slack off which is good and bad! Hang in there, training is cyclical!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Slomohusky, don't bee too hard on yourself. Next marathon is quite a ways away, save being hard on yourself until that gets closer.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm glad that you reached a turn around point :) I hope that your motivation continues to return
ReplyDeleteWOW glenn, great job on the run!! I feel "Meh" sometimes too now with running but I think its just cause I dont have any races to train for really. Glad you are back on track!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Maybe its too much of the ginger bread man coffee. lol. Nah, seriously, glad you had a normal week now. I guess it may take some time to get back in the swing of things? Anyways, good job and...........Keep Running.
ReplyDeleteI think part of it is also the time of year, plus you really trained well for the Long Beach Marathon. I think you needed a little respite.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I also think you've made it over the hump.
That's how I've been feeling now for a while. Then someone suggested to me I only run 3-4 days per week, and I think that might better allow me to spread out my priorities. Run some mornings. Write some mornings. Don't feel so guilty about not getting it all done. You know, stuff like that!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you've broken out of the funk.
