Well, this past weekend saw a first for me. A “DNF”. One of those things I’ve been able to avoid up until now. But, the deadly combination of a lack of consistent training and the onset of a cold had me hacking a lung on the slopes of Mt. Baldy on Monday, where I came up two miles and a thousand feet short of the finish.
But, before you shower me with condolences and sympathies, I’ve got to tell you – even a DNF up on the massive shoulder of this granite beast beat the heck out of sleeping in late and watching TV at home:
So, this week I’m allowing my cold to take it’s course and nursing my knee tendonitis. I’ll be back on the trails this weekend, and get things fired up in time to make sure that Long Beach in a few weeks isn’t a total wash.
I suppose that having a dnf is like having your first race. For some or most, I guess it is bound to happen. That looks like something else to climb man. Thanks for the vid and the sweet music to accompany it. Best wishes in your upcoming trail running and training.
ReplyDeleteOh, Glenn! I'm so sorry to hear that. ::hugs:: Take care of yourself and we'll see you in a few weeks!
ReplyDeleteI used to love hiking in that area growing up in SoCal; never went up the mountain though.
ReplyDeleteIt's still a DNF to be proud of. You gave it your best shot and covered some serious distance and elevation. Now rest up so you can get back out there again.
ReplyDeleteLove the attitude man!
ReplyDeleteI tagged you with some questions on my site:

I'm sure you'll bag it next year. No biggie, colds happen.
ReplyDeleteWith age comes wisdom...........
ReplyDeleteDNF > DNS
ReplyDeleteSo kudos to you for even putting yourself out there!
Ditto what Nobel said!
ReplyDeleteAs long as it is not DNT (did not try) you're all good. Rest up, get rid of the crud, then hit the trails!!!
ReplyDeleteNice video and post!!! Keep it up!!!
ReplyDeleteI know that mountain! My sister lives right below it (Upland). We went there last year to see the snow and I have to say - I didn't even want to walk it....couldn't even imagine running it! Amazing! Who cares if you DNF Good job!
ReplyDeleteOh man, that's way too much uphill.
ReplyDeleteLove the video. Sounds like you took your 1st DNF much better than I (I was sobbing like a baby : ( What a climb you accomplished -- a major feat! Looks like some very difficult stuff there. Congrats on what you finished and for your 1st DNF.
ReplyDeleteditto to nobel. that's some serious hill climbing! at least you got out there for some hope you are feeling better asap - both with the cold and the knee.
ReplyDeletei have missed your running-videos so i am glad you brought one back!
Wow Glenn Amazing views! Just to participate must have been fun!! Hope you are feeling better soon and over that cold!
ReplyDeleteI guess a DNF is better than a DNS! I have a couple of DNS's...
ReplyDeleteWe used to frequent Mt. Baldy when Hubs was in college. :)
DNF Did Nothing Fatal!
ReplyDeleteThat's a tough climb I DNFd hiking it a few years back!
