I’ve Missed a Day. Or Two…

I noticed today that I missed a day or two of blogging. Ooops! Oh well. That’s what happens when nothing exciting is going on.

ETP Day 15 (Monday): New rest day. Sorely needed. BMR allowance – 2012 calories. Calories inhaled – 2258. 247 calories over budget.

ETP Day 16 (Tuesday): Hill workout with Cal Coast. It has been uncharacteristically cloudy and overcast here in Southern California, and because of that, my Garmin took over 30 minutes to lock onto satellites. As a result, I missed some warm up miles. I ended up putting in 5.5 miles total, 1.4 miles during the 12 minute hard run. Half a mile less than plan. FAIL. I never got my heart rate above 90% of max. I just couldn’t get my legs moving without pain in my quads. DOUBLE FAIL. Calorie wise – this is the first day of my throttled down intake budget – I’m allowed 1762 for BMR plus 814 for exercise. I ate 2143 for a deficit of 434 calories.

ETP Day 17 (Wednesday): Easy four mile run in the late afternoon at Crystal Cove. My legs felt like toast. Nonetheless, I managed an average pace of 9:45 at an average heart rate of 72% of max. Performed my resistance workout. I was allowed my normal BMR of 1762 plus 652 calories for exercise. I ate 1856, which puts me 94 calories over budget.

Variance week to date:

  • Training budget: 0.5 miles under budget
  • Calorie budget: 93 calories under budget

On a related note – I’ve been incredibly fatigued. Normally I’m up at 5:30 or so, lounge with a cup of coffee, catch up on blogs, etc. This morning? Up at 7:00! Add to it sore quads and sore hip abductors – I need to watch myself the rest of this week so I don’t really screw something up. And with that – I’m off to the hills for 8 miles in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park this evening….

  2. Your calories budgeted seem awful low for how much you exercise. I'm thinking that might be why you are so fatigued.

  3. Are you getting enough carbs in your, Glenn?? Could be a reason for the fatigue. Make sure you take a multi-vitamin (for men, specifically). I also take a supplement called L-Glutamine, to help repair the muscles...might be a thought for you.

Yes, I may have the magistic mountains and all their glory to run in, but I can't even tell you how much running by the ocean moves me! Ahhhh, I miss it so much (I used to go there twice a year. In another life...). Happy Weekend (almost). And yeah, I only blog once or twice a week cuz I don't have a lot to report eithr. Hehe.

  4. I'm one of those run less, run fast people. No matter what anyone tells me, I can only run so much. I'm more of a quality versus quantity kinda gal. I've been following your workouts for a while now and noticed that these past 2 weeks, you've really stepped it up with the running. Looks like more running and less cross- training? Perhaps it is normal to feel tired since you are increasing your milages every week. I guess I've just been running so long that I am stuck in my old ways and will rest when I am tired. I don't care that I don't run as much as I should.

I am with Jill re: L-Glutamine. I love that stuff! Happy 4th!

  5. I can't help but think that the calorie watching is a little bit of the problem, mostly because like others have said you might be missing out on essentials due to a lower intake. I've been trying to lose another 10 pounds and the conventional calorie cutting is biting me in the butt in terms of energy.

  6. Gosh I know about calorie watching! Maybe you need more recovery calories? I find that sometimes it's not what I eat but when. Anyway, I think you are doing a great job at something really tough to do! Cheers!

  8. Hang in there Glenn. My base allowance was 1,650 per day when I was 195 lbs. and it dropped to 1,550 per day somewhere around 175 lbs.

Hopefully, your calorie counting program shows a nutritional summary. I like the breakdown calorie count does. It lists the logged foods by meal then by food on the left then lists the nutrition information along the top. At the end of each day I see the summary of my over/under of various nutrients. That way I know the only time I get enough potassium is when I eat potatoes and I also know I go way over on sodium!

  9. I re-read my post by along the top I meant nutrients are listed as column headers and the quantities are in the cells of the table with the daily totals at the bottom of each column.

Also, I forgot to say - never give up!

  10. We've been sore and tired, too! We were just saying that hobbling out of bed later than usual is telling us something. Rest day tomorrow, finally!!
Hang in there, rest up and I hope you can enjoy the 4th...with some SUN...we haven't had any sun all week!

  12. I'm exhausted lately too. Dunno what the deal is, b/c my mileage is much less than what it was when I was marathon training. Boo hoo. Have a good weekend!

  13. Have fun on the hills this evening Glenn, hoping your legs don't feel like toast. Better just toast than BURNT toast I would imagine though. Love your calories budget thingy.

  15. Hi Glenn,
Don't feel bad about the not posting for a few days.....welcome to my world:) I had issues with my garmin on a foggy and cloudy morning too! My garmin started and then it just went blank. Thankfully it was just the weather and there is nothing wrong with our garmins:)

    Enjoy the weekend Glenn!

  16. Do you think it's fatigue from the workout out or are you coming down with something? It sounds like you could also use a day off and schedule an appointment for a massage.

  17. Wow..just read back through your posts. You are doing great, Glenn! Come update your "Race to 10" numbers on my blog, pretty please. I was AWOL for a bit, but am back now. I am happy that you are tracking fat now..not just total weight. And...all those exercises look great. Reminds me...I need to go do some myself.

  18. did you ever mention where you were getting your cal calculations from? just wondering (and can't remember).

hope you can figure out the energy-situation... my first thought would be eating enough/resting enough as others have mentioned, not sure what else to suggest.
