My Running Route in the News

One of my tried and true running routes is the Newport Back Bay. I know I’m really really spoiled when I say things like “I’m so bored of this route.” I mean after all – how can you get bored running in a place like this?

Over the weekend, there was a little excitement in the Back Bay. Turns out a small private plane ran out of fuel and tried to ditch in the bay. It was big time news around here:

Unfortunately, the pilot and his two passengers did not make it. What’s even more unfortunate is that while the airport (John Wayne) is about 5 miles away, there are two golf courses within a mile that they could have landed on if they were only more familiar with the area. Here was the view Monday from roughly the same place the first photo was taken:

So sad.

  1. Oh my gosh! I saw this on the news but had no idea it was in the Back Bay because I was watching the news on mute. Wow! This IS big news around these parts.

It's not just you who is spoiled. I feel that same way. It is a great route when I haven't been there in a while, but running 16, 17, 19, and a couple 20 milers there all within 2 months and that trails gets old fast!

  2. Oh how sad. :(
I have to say...none of my routes or trails have yet become newsworthy...maybe that's a good thing?

  3. I was just there yesterday - so sad. I haven't gotten sick of it yet, everytime I go there, it has this smell (I think its the brush) that relaxes me. I feel at home. I love it. One day I'm gonna run into you there!!

  6. Whoa! Crazy. Some excitement! But also sadness. Are CA golf courses flat? Cause if they tried to land on one here it would be like ski moguls.
