Know Thyself

After 50 plus years on this planet, you think I would have learned.

For the past few months my training has been unguided. I’ve been wandering around the trails and paths of Orange County without any raison d'etre (pretty fancy French speak there). And yet I expect results. I am just not the type of person who knows how to achieve without a short term goal in my sights. I should know myself better.

If you’re lucky enough to be one of those folks who can achieve without setting those short term goals – all the power to you. If you’re having trouble getting/staying motivated - my advice? Know thyself.

With that in mind, I completed week one of my “HM training plan from scratch”. I had to juggle things around toward the end of the week, but I got all of the runs and my erg time in. This week is a repeat of last:

  • Monday: Rest
  • Tuesday: 3 miles easy
  • Wednesday: 2 miles easy
  • Thursday: 3 miles easy
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: 4 miles
  • Sunday: 30 minute erg
  • Total: 12 miles plus 30 minutes rowing

I may actually run 50 miles this month….

By the way – anyone know of a good 5K the weekend of May 8th and a 10K the weekend of May 29th here in LA/SD/OC/IE?

  1. I'm definitely with you in terms of needing goals, especially when it comes to running. Something about knowing that each run is part of a larger training plan, even if the plan is several months long, just gets my brain and body working right.

  2. I agree "just running" is nice for a week or so, but I dont do down time very well. I am a goal oriented person. If I dont have something to work towards I slack and then get upset cause of the result! Good luck!

  3. I'm with you! I have to have a race, on the books, a goal to work towards. Otherwise I feel like I'm just getting in junk miles.

  4. Good post, Glenn. I think it is hard to run aimlessly. I've had exactly one race since last fall, and it was hard to train without anything short term goals horizon. You give some great advice. Good luck with your training plans!

  5. Give in to the dark side my friend - spend more time on trails and you will have no need to worry about the wandering mind!!! Or at least, I tell myself that.... Have a great week and batten down the hatches for that next pummeling in the forecast :-0

  6. I am so glad my running trail isn't in Chino Hills. It's on the border of West Hills and Calabasas. It will still get too dry and too hot, but it won't be as bad as things inland. Phew.
