Legs - You've Done Good

I put in a nice, relaxing run yesterday. I kept everything slow and easy, concentrating more on heart rate than pace. One thing for sure - my legs did not complain. No siree. For a change, not one complaint at all. They *have* been complaining lately. A lot of little tweaks and pains here and there. Tight hammys. Tired quads. Sore joints. All those things that signal the end of a training cycle and spent shoes.

But yesterday they were along for the ride. To be honest, I've got to give kudos to my legs, knees and feet for sticking around for this long. Head and chest rebelled a couple weeks ago and tried to put the kibosh on this marathon idea, but you guys have always been there. For twenty four weeks now - almost 900 miles - you have responded. Not always fast and not always without a little complaining, but two more days and we'll be at our destination. And you want to hear something really impressive? Sometime Sunday while you guys are slaving away, you will have taken the rest of us along for over 1,200 running miles this year! Thank you legs, knees and feet! I promise that I will get you guys some new cushions to land on in the next couple of weeks.

Yesterday's run stats - 6.1 miles at an average heart rate of 72% of max. Yep. Nice and easy for sure......

  4. Isn't it RIDICULOUS, the amount of miles we put in for a substantially lower mileage race? Glad I never added up my training miles like that before an ultra. Bleh!
Yes, legs are important. Good legs. ;)

  5. I can't believe you've been marathon training for 6 months. Agh. I'm contemplating quitting for you. You are much more mentally tough than I am, that's for sure.

  6. Um, it's "Legs, You've Done Well". Must be hell having an English teacher read your blog.

You've done a fantastic job. Only a few more days, Glenn!

  8. hooray legs! i hope you will treat them to a massage post-marathon :)

what have you thought about your 24-week plan? i have been on one too for nyc... i think the length of it led to some burnout for me. just curious as to your thoughts.

and so i'm a little confused. your taper tricks link (in your comment on my blog) was to a youtube video "terror of a tiny town" (or something like that)? was that the right link?

  9. You are ready. All that's left is the victory lap. You've put in the miles, been through the trials and tribulations and you're going to kick some marathon butt. I know that's easy for me to say sitting here on the couch without the prospect of running 26.2 on Sunday, but I'm not suffering from the taper crazies so you must believe me.

I won't believe you in February when you say the same thing to me. So, please remind me of this comment then. Sure as the sun rises in the morning, you will run a fantastic race on Sunday...and the Cardinals will destroy the Dodgers :P.

  10. An ode to the legs...very nice. It really is amazing how we abuse them and give them very little. How about giving them a POST LB massage?
