Ten Mile Midweek Run

Another sign of my maturing as a newbie runner - I whipped out an easy 10 miles last night. It was only a few months ago that I remember being totally intimidated looking at my training plan for the Long Beach Marathon and seeng midweek double digit runs. Here I a now tackling an easy (translate - slow) 10 miles around the Back Bay. No big deal. Now, I need to convince myself the same about 26.2.

One thing for sure - I need to retire my old running shoes. I've been too busy (or maybe too cheap) to retire my old GT2140s. I've been using them on short runs, but somehow put them in my bag yesterday. Man am I sore! I see questions every now and then from people asking when they should retire shoes. For me it's when I start having pain in places I normally don't - quads, hips, lower back. And I have pain in all those areas today. A quick check of my shoe log in SportTracks shows why:

Wow. 474 miles? Seven months? For a Clydesdale like me that's not too bad!

  2. I retire my shoes when I start feeling pain in my knees and stuff on easy short runs. Usually that happens around 300 miles or so which is sad. They dont make shoes like they used to.

  3. Dang. 10 miles midweek, no big deal for this guy! I can't even fathom that being a midweek run. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that if I looked at my marathon training I would have one or two of those on there as well. EEEK! Do not freak out. Do not freak out. :p

  4. Glenn, way to go on your 10 miles. Now.......go buy some more shoes! I learned the hard way with my old kayanos after I put 500+ miles on them. lol. Keep it up on the running, and thanks for that comment on my site about what your coach said. He is exactly right.

  5. Great job on you 10 miler! Isn't it wonderful too look back and see how far you have come as a runner!
I usually retire my shoes around 350 miles or when my feet start aching, whichever comes first.

  6. 300 miles is my limit for shoes.

To answer your question - it was Sierra At Tahoe. Alpine was two weeks prior. ;)

  7. Look at you and your 10 mile midweek runs! That's fantastic, Glenn!
And that is a LONG time to be using the same shoes, but you seem to know what you're doing (and that's the most important part, right?).
    Have a great week!

  10. You're an old pro now...well, not old...just a pro. Great job on the 10 miles. You're gearing up for this weekend and getting some new shoes? 474 seems like a lot of miles on one pair of shoes!

  13. Hey Glenn. I wonder if you know you can add a column to SportTracks which shows you the date your shoes need to be replaced? It takes the estimated life (300 miles) and uses your current miles per week to forecast a day when you'll go over the limit. Right-click on the equipment list, pick "List Settings", then add "Replacement Date". Kinda cool.

  14. Glenn, I'm in the same space as you. I'll go out (okay, usually for 10k rather than 10 miles) run and think, "blimey, not that long ago that run would have been a goal for the future rather than something I could do on demand."

Shoes: I love the bouncy feeling that new shoes give you. Makes you realise how old your old shoes were.
