First Recovery Week in the Books

So I finally did it. I finally finished week one post marathon recovery. Never mind it took three weeks to do it.

I finished the week with a short but sweet tempo run on Saturday (3.2 miles) and a short but sweet trail run on Sunday (4 miles in head high grass - had to check for ticks afterwards). I finished the week a little short of plan (20 miles compared to the 27 on plan), but I did get out 5 days. The only problem was what to do with my spare time Saturday morning. I used to have to set aside 2 or 3 hours. Instead I was done in 45 minutes. I had some serious thumb twiddling time.

On the plan this week is a little more mileage. If I follow the plan to a tee (highly unlikely), I’ll be up over 30 miles again:

  • Monday: 4 miles easy. I’ve got to get the core and ab work back on track.
  • Tuesday: Interval day with Cal Coast. If I follow my plan, 6 miles. I’m pretty sure I’ll be shorter
  • Wednesday: 4 miles easy. Maybe I’ll erg. I’ve got to knock the dust off that puppy again.
  • Thursday: 3 X 1600 intervals. Including warm up and warm down should be around 7 miles. I doubt I’ll hit the track up though. Maybe I’ll just hit the trails in El Moro and get a few miles in. Then again, maybe not.
  • Friday: Scheduled rest day
  • Saturday: 8 miles. Probably will head out with my Cal Coast buddies tapering for the OC Marathon.
  • Sunday: 35 minute tempo run. But then again….  I might run a little 5K about an hour away in Temecula. I know – sounds strange to drive an hour to run for less than 30 minutes…..
  • Total plan: 32.5 miles. Total actual: ????

The silver lining here is that this weekend was real enjoyable. I’m not sure I’m ready to whip out a double digit run yet, but at least I feel like I’m on my way back to some consistent activity.

  1. First, I need to say a big, huge, THANK You for all the Boston support (and all support, really) you've given me in my Boston madness. It truly means a lot to always see your happy face there on the comments.

I love the comment it took 3 weeks to get a recovery week in :). Recovery is tough sometimes but you're getting back into the game and running strong. And if you're really bored on Saturday mornings, you can come over and clean my house for something to do :).

Looks like a good, strong week of running for you - yay!!

  4. sometimes i am like "what do i do with myself" on a 30-45min run day. other times it is much welcomed to have extra time to sit around :)

congrats on making it through recovery week 1 (+2 +3). at least you can "just" hang out with lighter/easier weeks for a bit!

  5. Congratulations on finally doing it, my friend! ::high fives::

I agree that short runs or run-less Saturdays feel really strange and awkward.

  6. Glenn: do you need a membership to run with Cal Coast? Just curious, I see those guys running Back Bay all the time.

So happy to hear that things are on the up and up. I think it is true what they say about taking off a day for every mile of a marathon! I am just starting to feel better and ready to ramp up for SD RNR.

  7. All right, good to hear, Glenn. Sounds like you are easing back into things. Those weeks following a big race are always a little strange when the mileage gets dialed down.

  8. If you don't need those 2-3 hours Saturday morning, I'll take them off your hands!

  9. Wow, I can't believe the OC marathon is already here! It sounds like you are right on track with your recovery. I always miss those long run Sundays...I can't even think about that yet, though. Too many other things....

  10. I sure have a lot of catching up to do with you!

You can look it it two ways, a recover week or a getting back on track week -- or both. What ever the case, it looks like a good week.

    *high five*

  13. Oh... I regularly drive long distances to run for 30 minutes.

I have been known to drive 2 hours for that.

    Enjoy the blog!!!

    Thanks!!

  14. Getting back on track. Sounds as though you are making it Glenn. The true test is staying on track right? So 3 weeks to get 1 week in. That is incredible. I need to incorporate some core training into my scheme of things. Best wishes.

  15. Congrats on getting the recovery week done. 3+ weeks out from my first marathon, and only 1 run attempted. Starting PT on my knee tomorrow to hopefully get back after it soon.
